Capital One Coders Middle School Initiative
The Thoreau after-school program is partnering with Capital One this spring to bring an exciting opportunity to our students. It is a 10-week program designed to teach middle school students introductory software development skills in a fun and engaging environment. Students create working mobile apps that they can share with their friends and family!
This activity will meet on Thur from Feb 21-May 2 from 2:25 PM – 4:05 PM (with the exception of Thu Apr 18). Students can take a late bus home. The program will conclude with a celebration event and App Challenge at Capital One headquarters in McLean on Thu May 16 @ 6:00 PM. Due to the limited spaces, a lottery will determine the students who will participate. Applications of students who can commit to attending all 10 sessions will be given priority. Students who previously participated in this program are not eligible to participate again. Applications are in the main office and on the Thoreau activities site on Blackboard (FCPS 24/7). Complete the application and return to the main office or Thoreau after-school specialist Shannon Campbell no later than Fri Feb 1. Students will receive notification of acceptance on Mon Feb 11.

The girls interest meeting will be in the library.
The boys interest meeting will be in Eagle Hall.
Junior Optimist Club
Students can earn service hours by participating in fun monthly projects and helping better our community with the Junior Optimist Club, a new international service club at Thoreau this year that exists in many elementary and high schools, including Madison and Marshall. We meet the 1st/3rd Thursday of every month in Ms. Gabro’s room, A124, during second session (3:10pm-4:05pm) after school. We welcome any new students who may drop by whenever they’d like!
